After The Silence of the Lambs was released, serial killer films were all the rage. And, as you can imagine with such a sensationalistic subject, for every one that was good, there were ten that were awful. As you can tell from the title, this book focuses on the awful. And, as you might also be able to guess, we don’t have a lot of nice things to say, and we go into great detail while saying them. We have a surprising amount of awful movies by good directors, like the stupefyingly terrible In Dreams by Neil Jordan, Jennifer 8 by Bruce Robinson, and the bizarrely, life-changingly horrendous Color of Night by Stunt Man auteur Richard Rush. We have Madonna vehicle Body of Evidence, misguided neo-noir Final Analysis, in which we discover that Kim Basinger’s hair is impervious to the elements, and alarmist blame-the-Internet thriller Untraceable. Round it out with genre-switch thriller Malice, Bruce Willis cliche-a-thon Striking Distance, and the pure, shake-your-head-in-disbelief terribleness of Al Pacino’s 88 Minutes.Still, even bad serial killer movies can be eerily fun to watch. I hope you enjoy these reviews and find something to watch on a fun night with a few friends over, with a movie that tried to be dark and scary, but ended up wrong and hilarious.
